Ranking the best NFL Draft picks ever Peyton Manning headlines list of best No. 1 overall picks in history

With the 2022 NFL Draft kicking off tonight, we here at CBSSports.com decided to kick off a series last month that features the top draft picks of all time. The way this series works is pretty simple: Since there are 32 picks in the first round, we went through and listed the top five picks ever for each one of those 32 spots. Our countdown started in March with the 32nd spot, and now, after more than four weeks of counting down, we've reached the top: we're finally ready to unveil the five best players ever taken with the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft. When a team lands the top pick, it's usually viewed as a slam dunk way to turn around a struggling franchise. However, that's not always the case. For Jerry Rice Jersey every Peyton Manning, you get a JaMarcus Ru sell or a Tim Couch. This year, the first pick in the draft belongs to the Jaguars and things could get interesting, and that's mostly because there's no surefire star in this year's draft cla s. Last year, the Jaguars also had the No. 1 pick, but back then, they didn't have to think twice about what they were going to do because Trevor Lawrence was the obvious pick. This year, it's definitely not that simple. As a matter of fact, our can't even agree on whom the Jaguars will be taking. Our five draft writers have the Jags going four different routes with their pick with two of them predicting Travon Walker, one predicting Evan Neal, one predicting Aidan Hutchinson and one going with Ikem Ekwonu. No matter who they take, there's a good chance we won't be seeing them on the list below anytime soon. With that in mind, let's rank the top-five players ever to be selected with the first overall pick. 1949 NFL Draft:First overall pick ( )Team: Eagles (1949-62)Bednarik has one of the most unique stories of any player in the history of the NFL. The future Eagles star didn't get drafted until he was nearly 25 years old and that's because he immediately joined the Army after high school so that he could fight in World War II. Bednarik didn't attend college until AFTER his time in the military, which is how he became one of the oldest top picks ever. Once Bednarik finally made his way to the NFL, he left his mark on the game almost immediately. During his rookie year, he was so good that the Eagles decided to have him play both ways. Not only was he the team's starting center, but he was also a starting linebacker. Despite playing both ways, Bednarik almost never mi sed a game. During his 14-year career, he only mi sed three of a po sible 172 games. Not only was he able to stay healthy, but "Concrete Charlie" thrived on the field: He was named a first-team All-Pro a total of six times while also being selected to the Pro Bowl a total of eight times.Bednarik was known for his monstrous hits and one of his biggest came in 1960 when he knocked out Frank Gifford during a game, which set the stage for one of the most iconic photos in NFL history. Chuck Bednarik destroys Frank Gifford. SI Vault (@si_vault) Gifford didn't play in the NFL for 18 months due to the hit he took from Bednarik. A few weeks after making the hit on Gifford, he made an even bigger one for the Eagles. With time running down in the 1960 NFL Championship game against Green Bay, the Packers were trying to score a game-winning touchdown, but Bednarik tackled running back Jim Taylor at the 8-yard line to preserve Philly Richard Sherman Jersey 's 17-13 win. The Eagles' title that season was one of two that Bednarik would win with Philadelphia (1949, 1960).Bednarik is one of the greatest defensive players in NFL history and was voted to the NFL's 50th anniversary, 75th anniversary and 100th anniversary teams.1970 NFL Draft:First overall pick (Steelers)Teams: Steelers (1970-83)It's hard to imagine the Pittsburgh Steelers as the worst team in football, but that's exactly what they were heading into the 1970 NFL Draft. The Steelers finished the 1969 season with a 1-13 record which allowed them to earn the top pick in the draft and they definitely needed it, considering that 1969 marked the 22nd straight year that they had mi sed out on the playoffs. With the first pick of the 1970 draft, the Steelers laid the foundation for their future succe s by selecting Terry Bradshaw. All Bradshaw did was bring a swagger to Pittsburgh that the team was sorely mi sing. By his third year with the team, the Steelers were playing in their first AFC title game ever, which is something that would soon become a common occurrence. Although Bradshaw didn't make it to the Super Bowl in 1972, he did produce one of the most iconic plays in NFL history when he threw the "Immaculate Reception" to Franco Harris. December 23, 1972: The Immaculate Reception! That Blitz Guy (@ThatBlitzGuy) That 60-yard TD catch by Harris allowed the Steelers to shock the Raiders. Although the Steelers would lose to the Dolphins in the AFC title game the following week, their playoff appearance in 1972 was a preview of things to come.Behind Bradshaw and the vaunted Steel Curtain defense, the Steelers would win four Super Bowls in a six-season span from 1974 to 1979. Not only did Bradshaw win an NFL MVP award during one of those Super Bowl winning seasons (1978), but he was also voted Super Bowl MVP in two of Pittsburgh's four wins (Super Bowl XIII and XIV). Although he didn't win MVP in Super Bowl X, he did come up with a clutch play when he connected with Lynn Swann for a 64-yard score that provided the winning points in Pittsburgh's 21-17 win over Dallas. Super Bowl X 3rd and 5Bradshaw hits Lynn Swann with a 64 yard for the winning TDHe takes a huge hit from Larry Cole just after he throws the . Old Time Football (@Ol_TimeFootball) Bradshaw is tied for the second-most Super Bowl wins by a quarterback in NFL history, trailing only Tom Brady. The Steelers legend is also tied for the second-most Super Bowl MVP awards.1985 NFL Draft:First overall pick (Bills)Teams: Bills (1985-99), Washington (2000-03)When the Buffalo Bills decided to take Bruce Smith with the first overall pick in 1985, it was somewhat of a gamble and that's because there hadn't been a great track record of succe s in the NFL with defensive ends selected in the top 10. Fortunately for the Bills, the gamble paid off and they ended up landing one of the best defensive players in NFL history. Although Smith's career got off to a slow start in 1985, he would dominate the NFL after that. In the 13 seasons from 1986 to 1998, Smith hit the double-digit sack mark a total of 12 times and the only reason he didn't make it a perfect 13 is because he mi sed 11 games in 1991 due to a knee injury. In 1987, Smith tallied 12 sacks even though he only played in 12 games. The next year, he totaled 11 sacks even though he once again mi sed four games. Smith's productivity got people wondering what he might do if he could stay on the field for all 16 games, and in 1990, everyone found out the answer to that question. In a season that ended with the Bills in the Super Bowl, Smith led the NFL with 19 sacks, which is still one of the highest single-season totals in NFL history. The season ended with Smith winning one of his two career defensive player of the year awards.Over the course of his career, Smith would rack up exactly 200 sacks, which is still the NFL career record for sacks. To give you an idea of how dominant that number is, just consider this: Only ONE other NFL player ever even has more than 160 sacks (Reggie White finished his career with 198). In an era where the Bills K-Gun offense made all the headlines, Smith anchored a defense that helped propel Buffalo to four straight Super Bowls.1983 NFL Draft:First overall pick (Baltimore Colts)Team: Trey Sermon Jersey Broncos (1983-98)There's one big difference between John Elway and everyone else on this list and that's the fact that Elway never played for the team that drafted him. In the lead up to the 1983 draft, Elway made it clear that he would never play for the Baltimore Colts, but despite those threats, the team decided to select him anyway. When it became clear that Elway wasn't bluffing, the Colts in exchange for two players and a future first-round pick. The Colts ended up using that pick on offensive lineman Ron Solt, in case you're wondering who ended up winning the trade.Although picking Elway didn't work out for the Colts, it definitely worked out for the Broncos, who became an instant contender with Elway. After only making the playoffs three times from 1970 to 1982, things got immediately better with Elway, who led the Broncos to the postseason three times in his first four years with the team. Overall, Elway would lead the Broncos to the playoffs a total of 10 times with five of those trips ending in a Super Bowl appearance. Although Elway started his career by Raheem Mostert Jersey losing the first three Super Bowls he played in, he got to ride off into the sunset with consecutive Super Bowl wins during the final two seasons of his career. Elway's helicopter run against the packers in Super Bowl XXXII is still viewed as one of the most iconic plays in Super Bowl history. John Elway needed a first down. "The Helicopter" happened next. Rewatch the Super Bowl XXXII victory for FREE with NFL GamePa s: NFL (@NFL) Elway wasn't just known for making big plays in the Super Bowl though. As a matter of fact, he put together one of the most famous scoring drives in NFL history and it came in an AFC Championship. With the Broncos trailing the Browns by a touchdown in the 1986 AFC title game, Elway engineered what would become known as "The Drive," when he led the team on a 98-yard scoring drive that culminated with a game-tying TD pa s with just 37 seconds left to play in regulation.Even though he's been retired for more than 20 years, the 1987 NFL MVP still ranks in the top-15 in all-time pa sing yards, pa sing touchdowns and completed pa ses. 1998 NFL Draft:First overall pick (Indianapolis Colts)Team: Colts (1998-2011), Broncos (2012-15)You can have a debate over the first four spots on this list, but the one thing that's not up for debate is the top spot on this list and that's because it belongs to Peyton Manning. After being selected No. 1 overall by the Colts in 1998, Manning went on to have one of the most storied careers in NFL history. If you want individual accolades, Manning has plenty of those: During his 18-year career, he was voted NFL MVP a total of five times (2003, 2004, 2008, 2009, 2013), which is a record that still stands. He also won the Comeback Player of the Year award during his first year with the Broncos in 2012 after mi sing the entire 2011 season due to a neck injury.During his career, Manning re-wrote the NFL record book and although some of his records have since been broken, he still holds the single-season record for most touchdown pa ses (55) and most pa sing yards (5,477). Those are two 16-game records that Manning will forever hold now that the NFL is expanding to 17 games.Manning thrived even though his coaching staff always seemed to be changing around him. Not only is he one of only two quarterbacks in NFL history to win a Super Bowl with multiple teams, but he's the ONLY quarterback in league history to make it to four Super Bowls with four different head coaches (Tony Dungy and Jim Caldwell with the Colts, John Fox and Gary Kubiak with the Broncos). Manning played in two Super Bowls with both the Colts and Broncos and won one with each team. When Manning decided to retire following the 2015 season, he did so with 200 total wins, 539 touchdown pa ses and 71,940 pa sing yards, which all ranked first in NFL history at the time of his retirement (He still ranks in the top-3 in all three categories).Manning was so good during his career that the Hall of Fame selection committee didn't really even have to debate whether he deserved to be enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of fame. The committee voted Manning in on the first ballot after talking about his candidacy for just 13 seconds. What's understood doesn't need to be explained.(via ) B/R Gridiron (@brgridiron) Now that he's in the Hall of Fame, Manning is just the 15th No. 1 overall pick ever inducted to the Hall of Fame and five of them are on this list. Here's a short look at other players who were considered for the list: Honorable mention: Troy Aikman, Earl Campbell, O.J. Simpson, Orlando Pace, Paul Hornung, Eli Manning.Note:Although Joe Namath (1965 AFL Draft) and Steve Young (1984 Supplemental Draft) were both top picks, they weren't considered for this list since they weren't selected in the actual NFL Draft.Bonus mention: John Matuszak (Oilers, 1973). You might not know Matuszak's name based on his football career, but you've probably seen him on TV at least once in your life, especially if you've ever seen The Goonies. The football player turned actor played Sloth in the 1985 movie. Jimmy Garoppolo Jersey Actor John Matuszak's Sloth make-up for The Goonies... Matt Bloom (@MattBloomFilms)

had one of the best seasons for a defensive lineman in NFL history, culminated with winning the A sociated Pre s' Chris Stewart Jersey Defensive Player of the Year award at the NFL Honors ceremony on Thursday night. Watt, an All-Pro and Pro Bowl selection, is the seventh player to earn the honor and the first since Troy Polamalu in 2010.Watt joins brother as the first pair of brothers to win Defensive Player of the Year. J.J. Watt won the award three times (2012, 2014, 2015), tied for the most in NFL history. The 2021 season was historic for Watt, as he finished with 22.5 sacks in 14 games -- tying Michael Strahan for the single-season sack record.Watt finished his 2021 season leading the league in sacks, quarterback hits (39) and fumble recoveries (three). He averaged 1. Eric Staal Jersey 5 sacks per game and finished with 12.5 sacks in the second half and overtime -- which also led the league. He's just the fifth player to lead the league in sacks, tackles for lo s, and quarterbacks hits in a season -- joining , J.J. Watt, , and . Watt's 72 career sacks in his first 77 games are the most by any linebacker in NFL history. His 0.94 sacks-per-game average is the highest in league history, as Watt and Reggie White are the only players to have 13-plus sacks in four consecutive seasons. Only Mikko Koivu Jersey White (nine), Bruce Smith (seven) and Kevin Greene (six) have more 13-plus sack seasons than Watt -- whose four 13-plus sacks in his first five seasons are tied with White for the most in NFL history. What Watt has been able to accomplish in his first five seasons has been historic, as his 150 quarterback hits over his first 77 games trail only J.J. Watt for the most in league Matt Dumba Jersey history (most ever for a linebacker). Only White has more sacks (87) over his first 77 games in league history. The 's 2023 schedules are likely to be unveiled this week, but every team's opponents for the upcoming season are already known. With that in mind, it's safe to say that a big part of the ' Minnesota Twins Jersey succe s or failure this fall will hinge on how well Todd Bowles' defense fares against young quarterbacks.Tampa Bay will play 17 games this fall, and it's reasonable to think that eight of them nearly half will be against quarterbacks with five or fewer career starts entering this season. That includes the three rookies taken in the top four picks of the 2023 NFL Draft two games against and , plus games at ( ) and ( ). Those rookies might not yet be starting when the Bucs face their teams, but Tampa Bay also has two games against and (four career starts), one against and (five career starts) and one against and (one career start). That's eight out of 17 against young, inexperienced starting quarterbacks, and it could be more. The Bucs actually face all of the first five quarterbacks picked in last month's draft, so in theory, they could see second-round pick whenever the come to Tampa, and le s likely third-round pick when they face .From a quarterback standpoint, the Bucs' 2023 season will be very different from 2022, and not just because Tom Brady has retired. Brady went up against some of the NFL's best quarterbacks last year, facing , , and . By comparison, you could argue that the Bucs will face only three top-10 NFL quarterbacks this fall, in , and perhaps .So given the relative youth of the quarterbacks they'll be facing, the larger question is this: How will the Bucs defense handle the opportunity to confuse/confound/ Fernando Rodney Jersey rattle an inexperienced pa ser? The answer has been a mixed bag in the past four years with Bowles running the Tampa Bay defense. From the middle of 2019 to the middle of 2021, this was a dream matchup for Bowles' defense, which won seven straight games against quarterbacks with 10 career starts or fewer. The Bucs beat , , , Hurts and Tony Oliva Jersey early in their careers in that stretch, giving up a total of 10 touchdowns pa ses against 10 interceptions in those seven wins. This is what you'd expect, with Bowles throwing multiple fronts and coverages and creative blitz packages against quarterbacks still learning how to read and proce s the defenses in front of them.Since then? It's not pretty. Since November 2021, with Brady at quarterback, the Bucs are 1-6 against opposing quarterbacks with 10 career starts or fewer, and that one single win needed overtime last year to beat and a team that would finish 4-13. These aren't all high Justin Morneau Jersey draft picks, with lo ses to players like Carolina's and 's . In going 1-6 in those games, the Bucs defense gave up eight touchdowns and managed one interception, that coming against McSorley. Now, you can affix an asterisk to some of these Bucs lo ses. The last one, against Ridder in Atlanta, came with the Bucs resting their starters in the second half (some more than that) because their playoff seeding was set. They lost to and last year, but more because came in as an injury replacement. The overall vibe remains intact. The Bucs' 2023 season will be largely played against younger quarterbacks. Of their 17 opponents, they're likely to have six games total against quarterbacks with 35 or more career starts entering the 2023 season: twice with , and , Allen and . Four games against rookies, four against very new starters, another against Fields, who is 5-20 as an NFL starter. It's counterintuitive, but in four years of Bowles running the Bucs defense, Tampa Bay is actually better against older, more Nelson Cruz Jersey experienced quarterbacks. Consider that 35-start line as a dividing point they're just 12-10 (55% wins) against quarterbacks with 35 career starts or fewer, and 27-17 (61% wins) against quarterbacks with 36 or more.If the Bucs are to contend for a third straight division title this fall, they'll have to find more consistent succe s against the younger quarterbacks who will be all over their schedule in 2023.Greg Auman is FOX Sports NFC South reporter, covering the Buccaneers, Falcons, Panthers and Saints. TAMPA, Fla. -- This wasn't the kind of history came out of retirement to make. Before Sunday, the quarterback had been 89-0 in his career in home games where he leads by 17 points or more at any point in the game. Just three lo ses in 23 NFL seasons, period, once he had Devon Travis Jersey such a big cushion. And somehow the Bucs went from leading the 17-0 just before halftime hey, this is how they're capable of playing again to Brady committing four turnovers in a span of 10 offensive plays, helping the Bengals to ."Turnovers kill you, and they killed us today," said Brady, who committed four turnovers combined in the first 11 games of this season. "It's not the way we need to (play) in order to win, and that's certainly not how I need to play in order to win ... We literally just gave them the ball."Up 14 at the half and lose by 11 points or more? That had happened just four times to any NFL team since 1987, just under 35 years, and the Bucs pulled it off Sunday, finding a new and even more confounding way to lose.A week earlier, they trailed 28-0 at the half, losing 35-7 at the . They've lost twice to the and on mi sed two-point conversions. They lost on a one-handed fourth-down touchdown catch in the final minute to set up an overtime lo s.Despite all these lo ses eight now, the most ever for a team with Brady as starting quarterback the Bucs have the odd consolation of still being Jaime Garcia Jersey in first place in the NFC South, one game ahead of three 5-9 teams and still very much in control of their playoff destiny."All you can do is fight," coach Todd Bowles said after the game. "You can fight, you can play smarter, you can coach smarter, and we have to keep fighting. We understand that what we're doing is not good enough, by far. It's not even close to good enough, and we have three games left to save our season."The Bucs play on Christmas at Arizona, which just lost quarterback to a season-ending knee injury, and is 4-10 and has lost four in a row and six of seven. Win there and at home on New Year's Day against Carolina (which beat them 20-3 in Charlotte this season) and Tampa Bay will clinch back-to-back division titles for the first time in their history, earning a home playoff game.Probabilities aside, that seems hard to imagine, given how the Bucs played in the second half Sunday, up 17-3 and in complete control of the game.Facing a fourth-and-1 from their 26-yard line, Bowles called for a fake punt, but as the ball was snapped directly to backup running back Gio Bernard, he didn't seem to expect it, and the ball bounced off the side of his helmet and he was tackled for a turnover on downs. Even then, the Bucs defense held the Bengals to just a field goal and kept a 17-6 lead. Then a buzzsaw of four Brady turnovers in four drives, leading to three Bengals touchdowns and a 27-17 lead. Brady had a pa s intercepted by , fumbled on a sack and then fumbled on a handoff to . The Bengals only had to go 31, 13 and 39 yards for their touchdowns, this after getting the ball at the Bucs' 13 off the fake punt. If there were any chance of bouncing back for a comeback, Brady threw another interception on the next drive, for four turnovers in a span of 10 offensive plays."We're pi sed off," Bowles said of his locker room after the game. "It's the same old song. It's Bucs vs. Bucs. We play a good first half, and the second half, we come out and we shoot ourselves in the foot, either by turnovers or penalties Kendrys Morales Jersey or field position on special teams. It's a tale of two halves, and the half we played in the second half was Bucs vs. Bucs."That has been the storyline all season, a team good enough for Brady to come out of retirement for, yet unable to score anywhere nearly as consistently as his first two seasons in Tampa, getting 30 points a game. The 23 points scored by the Bucs on Sunday including six on a meaningle s touchdown pa s with 49 seconds left marked the second-highest scoring total this season, behind a 41-31 lo s to the that also included a tack-on touchdown in the final minutes. The defense continues to be unable to create takeaways with any regularity. They had one Sunday, intercepting a pa s, but that's just 13 takeaways total in 14 games in the entire NFL, only the (11) and Saints (10) have forced fewer. The Bucs have just three games left, and could even back into the playoffs as a 7-10 division champ, but it's been so rare that they've played like a first-place team, that they've played like a winning team from start to finish, that even if they got to the playoffs, there's little confidence in what the Bucs could Justin Smoak Jersey do, even with a seven-time Super Bowl champion as their quarterback."I think we have the ability to play good," Brady said. "I don't think we lack confidence in playing good. It's just consistency. Two good quarters doesn't win you any football games, and five turnovers doesn't win you football games."It's the first time in Brady's career he's had multiple interceptions and multiple lost fumbles in the same game. His ability to avoid turnovers was perhaps what he'd done best as a 45-year-old, but even that has given way with six turnovers in the last two lo ses.The Bucs are a team with a losing record, but reasonably, all they have to do is beat two teams that have losing records in the next three weeks, and they'll be a playoff team, if an underwhelming one. Tampa Bay does not have much time to turn their season around, but that remains their goal, however frustrating that pursuit continues to be for them."We have a lot of toughne s," Bowles said. "We have to deal with adversity better. We have to stop the miscues and the Bucs vs. Bucs. We understand that. We talk about it, we Aaron Sanchez Jersey preach it, we practice it, we take ownership of it, and we'll fight to stop it."Top stories from FOX Sports:Read more from the :Greg Auman is FOX Sports NFC South reporter, covering the Buccaneers, Falcons, Panthers and Saints.
