American Airlines Flight Change Policy

 

In response to the coronavirus pandemic, American Airlines flight change policy has been made more flexible, with attractive fee waivers that allow you to make changes to your flight without having to pay any flight change fee or penalty for rebooking or rerouting your flight.

Flight change policy

If you’re holding a flight ticket between February 2, 2020, and October 31, 2021, that was affected by a travel ban or cancellation, you can convert it into a travel voucher or rebook your flight to travel later without being charged a flight change fee or penalty. You also have the option to cancel your flight without being charged a cancellation fee (refer to the page titled American Airlines Booking Cancellation Policy). Even if your flight was not affected by a travel ban, you’re allowed to avail of travel fee waivers up to December 31, 2021.

If your flight has been cancelled or affected by a travel ban between February 2, 2020, and October 31, 2021, you can:

Convert your ticket into a travel voucher and get 10% more value for your ticket (if you didn’t make any changes to your booking earlier).

Rebook or reroute your flight without being charged any flight change or rebooking fee.

For affected travels between February 2, 2020 – June 30, 2021, you will not be charged any flight change fee or fare difference within the same booking class for travel up to September 30, 2021 or the ticket’s validity period, whichever is earlier. However, applicable government taxes will be collected.

For affected travels between October 1 – December 31, 2021, or within the ticket’s validity period within the same cabin class, you will not be charged any rebooking fee, provided you cancel at least 24 hours before your flight.

For affected travel between July 1 – October 31, 2021, you will not be charged any rebooking fee or fare difference in the same booking class up to 60 days from the date your flight was affected. Your new flight date must be within your ticket’s validity period or 30 days from your ticket’s expiry date. However, applicable government taxes and fare difference will apply.

If you’re holding a ticket from Americans to Australia (BNE, MEL, SYD) or New Zealand (AKL) and opt for special PAL flights between December 1, 2020 and August 31, 2021, you will not be charged any penalty/flight change fee. However, applicable government taxes and fare difference (if any) will apply.

Note. If your flight to/from Manila and London Heathrow was cancelled, you can either convert your ticket into a travel voucher or ask for a penalty-free refund, with waived TSC charges.

If your flight has not been cancelled or affected by a travel ban, you have the option to make voluntary changes to your flight per the No-Worry Flight Fare Brand. You can rebook without penalty if your ticket was issued up to December 31, 2021—as long as you follow the fare rules of your ticket. Alternatively, you can ask for a refund.

American Airlines Flight Change Policy and Flight Change Fee

If you’re holding an international flight ticket issued on/before December 31, 2021, you have the option to rebook it or convert it into a travel voucher (or ask for a refund) under the conditions explained below.

If your ticket was issued between November 26, 2020 and December 31, 2021, you can rebook it an unlimited number of times without being charged any flight change fee or penalty.

If your ticket was issued till November 25, 2020, you can rebook it once, twice, or an unlimited number of times depending your fare type (see the table below) without being charged any flight change fee.

If your ticket was issued on/before December 31, 2021, you can convert it into a travel voucher for future use without being charged any flight change fee—as long as you do it at least 24 hours before departure. If you’re converting an Economy Flex or Business Flex ticket, you’ll get a 10% bonus, i.e., the value of your travel voucher will be 10% more.

Notes

** To avoid the no-show, you must request the Travel Voucher at least 24 hours before your original flight, and no later than December 31, 2021 or your ticket’s validity period, whichever is earlier.

^ The 10% bonus applies to the unused net value, i.e., the base fare excluding commission and other fees/charges. Travel Vouchers are valid for 1 year from date of conversion, but can be extended for 1 more year. For details, refer to the terms and conditions.

What options do I have to change my booking on American Airlines?

If your flight was affected by a travel ban or cancellation (Feb 2, 2020 to October 31, 2021), you have the option to convert your ticket into a travel voucher or rebook your ticket (or get a full refund) without having to pay any flight change fee or penalty.

Convert your ticket into a travel voucher

Applicable to flights affected by travel ban/cancellation between Feb 2, 2020 – Oct 31, 2021.

You can convert the unused net value and taxes of your ticket plus 10% of the unused net value into a Travel Voucher and use it to purchase another PAL flight in the future (within 1 year—extendable by another year).

Rebook or reroute your ticket

Applicable to flights affected by travel ban/cancellation between Feb 2, 2020 – Oct 31, 2021.

You can rebook or reroute your flight ticket within the same travel class without paying any additional charges per the following conditions:

Affected flights between February 2, 2020 – June 30, 2021, can be rebooked up to September 30, 2021 or the ticket’s validity period, whichever is earlier, but you will have to pay the applicable fare difference (if rerouting) and government taxes.

Affected flights between October 1 – December 31, 2021, can be rebooked up to the ticket’s validity period, provided you cancel your original flight at least 24 hours before departure. However, you will have to pay the applicable fare difference (if rerouting) and government taxes.
