Falcons 'right where we want to be' after beating Rams Published: Jan 06, 2018 at 10:42 PM Michael Silver LOS ANGELES -- He has felt the sting of postseason heartache more acutely than any coach in recent memory, having twice watched apparent triumphs disintegrate in surreal fashion. So when Dan Quinn walked into the Daily Grill restaurant inside the Westin Los Angeles Airport on Friday afternoon with his wife, Stacey, for a happy-hour snack, it would have been perfectly understandable if the ' third-year coach had discu sed his team's impending playoff date with the explosive L.A. in stoic and cautious tones. The , after all, had survived a choppy and challenging regular season, sneaking into the postseason as the NFC's No. 6 seed only after defeating the playoff-bound on the final Sunday. And, in the eyes of many, they'd still failed to present a convincing case that they'd recovered from the emotional wreckage of the previous February, . On a star-studded Saturday night in Tinseltown, with Snoop Dogg as the halftime performer, the would take the field as underdogs. Yet Quinn, a blue-collar grinder from Morristown, N.J., wasn't about to roll over and play dead, even for effect, as he entered the Daily Grill. "We just put two great weeks of practice together," he said. "I wouldn't want to play us right now." A little more than 24 hours later, the charged out of the north end-zone tunnel at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum with purpose Brian Anderson Jersey , intensity and focus. Then they went out and fulfilled their coach's prophesy, defeating the by a 26-13 score and advancing to face the top-seeded in next Saturday's divisional round. With Philly still reeling from the season-ending injury to star quarterback -- -- the suddenly look quite capable of advancing to a second consecutive NFC Championship game. As Atlanta proved on Saturday, , this is a team that knows how to turn it up at the right time. "Absolutely," said quarterback , who completed 21 of 30 pa ses for 218 yards, including a fourth-quarter touchdown throw to while falling onto his back. "We're a battle-tested group that's been through a lot, and we thrive in those situations. That's a reflection of (Quinn). That's him: 'Who cares? The bigger the situation, the more we're gonna lock in and do what we do.'" As we stood outside the ' locker room following Saturday's game, I asked Quinn to explain the source of his confident proclamation the previous day. "It's because there had been a shift in our team, and I recognized it," Quinn replied. "I think the shift probably took place for us after we lost at New Orleans (on Dec. 24). We had to play Carolina the next week with our season on the line, and we had to take a hard look at ourselves. "What I mean by a shift is, no more 'almost,' and no more 'except for.' We knew that if we really committed ourselves to getting the details down and eliminating mistakes, we'd be tough to beat. And trust me -- this team's been through the fire together. And when you come out the other end, there's a toughne s and a togetherne s that can be very powerful." When it comes to rebounding from crushing defeats -- and living with the and of confetti-deprivation -- Quinn has far more personal experience than he'd care to acce s. As the ' defensive coordinator three seasons ago, he was by a painful yard. Then, last February, his were blowing out the in LI, only to blow a 28-3 third quarter lead and lose in overtime Andre Dawson Jersey . Kyle Shanahan left to become the ' head coach, . Sure enough, the ' offense was le s prolific in 2017 under new offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian than it had been the previous year, when Ryan was the league's Most Valuable Player. Atlanta's fast and physical defense, however, is better than it was a year ago. And on Saturday, against a special teams unit that was the cla s of the NFL during the regular season, the came up with two plays that set a tone for the rest of the game. First, 's punt bounced off the foot of the ' and was eventually recovered by the ' at the L.A. 17. That allowed Atlanta to take a 3-0 lead on 's 29-yard field goal with 7:13 left in the first quarter, despite the fact that neither offense had registered a first down. Then, after Bryant's 51-yard field goal made it 6-0 with 1:23 left in the quarter, first-team All-Pro kicker returner coughed up the ball on a hit from , and teammate Kamal Ishmael recovered at the ' 32. Eight plays later, running back (18 carries, 66 yards) scored a three-yard touchdown -- with a huge a sist from center , who e sentially bull-rushed him into the end zone as 190-pound L.A. safety waged a losing leverage battle. "We weren't ourselves early in the ballgame, including myself," conceded coach , who'll likely earn Coach of the Year honors for the dramatic turnaround he engineered during his rookie season. "Once we settled in, Atlanta made enough plays to beat us, which is why they're who they are. They're a team that played for the last year and fought through some adversity to get back to the playoffs, and they're very tough." The cut the lead to 13-7 when second-year quarterback -- since arriving as the youngest head coach in modern NFL history -- lofted a gorgeous 14-yard touchdown pa s to rookie wide receiver . A 38-yard strike from Goff (24 of 45, 259 yards) to wideout (nine catches, 142 yards) set up 's 35-yard field goal with three seconds remaining, cutting the ' halftime lead to 13-10. At that point, the felt pretty good about their situation, all things considered. Quinn, however, felt even better about the ' plan, which focused on containing the ' star running back, (14 carries, 101 yards; four catches, 10 yards) while freeing up Freeman (18 carries, 66 yards) and fellow halfback (14 carries, 40 yards) on outside-zone runs. Credit Sarkisian with making smart halftime adjustments that allowed the to methodically move the ball, with Ryan repeatedly finding Jones (nine catches, 94 yards) and (four catches, 75 yards) on underneath patterns. "At halftime I said, 'We get the ball first; let's go down and have Jose Fernandez Jersey a nine-minute drive to start the half,'" Quinn said. "And exactly what I hoped would happen, did happen." Technically speaking, the held the ball for the first 8:15 of the third quarter, driving 76 yards on 16 plays to set up Bryant's 25-yard field goal. Bryant's 54-yarder made it 19-10 with 19 seconds left in the third quarter, and after the cut the lead to six, Atlanta responded with an eight-play, 83-yard scoring drive that e sentially ended L.A.'s season. "We didn't play our best," Goff said late Saturday night. "I think Matt managed the game really, really well, and that speaks to his overall experience." Ryan's biggest plays came midway through the fourth quarter. On second-and-13 from the Atlanta 38, he flipped a short screen to Sanu, who slipped to his left and raced ahead for a 52-yard gain. Two plays later, on second-and-goal from the 8, Ryan faked a handoff to Freeman and rolled back to Jazz Chisholm Jersey his right. As edge rusher charged toward him, Ryan planted his feet, but his rear foot slipped on the soft Coliseum gra s, and his body weight shifted backward. No matter: Ryan lofted the ball to his right as Barwin arrived, and his star receiver caught it and swept inside the right pylon. "It was an added degree of difficulty," Ryan joked as he left the locker room. "I couldn't really see everything, but I knew I threw a good one." Said Jones: "I saw him fall and then I saw the ball." The had one last gasp, but Goff's apparent five-yard touchdown strike to tight end with 2:11 remaining was reversed on a replay review, and soon the were in victory formation and looking ahead to Saturday's showdown with the . "We're gonna have to do it the hard way," Freeman said. "Last year, we had a bye in the first round, and then we won two home games and were in the . But sometimes, you've gotta go the hard way, and I like these tough challenges. And at the end of the day, we're right where we want to be. "We're going into another tough environment, and basically, nobody likes us but us. People are gonna end up vibing on us, cause they don't have any other choice. We've been getting a lot of BS from people on the outside all year -- since February, really. But once again we're back in the playoffs, back in the second round. I'm super proud of us." As the filed out of the Coliseum and into the Los Angeles night, no one exuded more pride than their confident coach. He certainly has the steadfast support of his bo s, owner Arthur Blank, who said of Quinn: "He's great at getting the team ready for games like this, for getting them in the right place. I think his experience in Seattle, and especially now in Atlanta, has prepared him for that. It's not a God-given talent; I think it's one you really have to develop. He's done that, and he's got us peaking at the right time." If the truly are peaking, they have to be considered a legitimate threat to win the conference, which would give Quinn another shot at redemption. It's a sore subject that he hasn't shied away from addre sing, but one that he's perfectly willing to compartmentalize for the cause. "The resiliency showed by this team is what's important," Quinn said. "'Cause everyone wants you to get back to the and replay that, and you don't get to replay it. You learn from the scars, but you don't get to replay it. "I knew going in this would be a challenging season, and that our division would be tough. You've heard me say, 'The only fight that matters is Jorge Alfaro Jersey the one you're in.' So when people bring up the ? F--- that. We're not looking ahead. We're not looking back. We're looking at what's right in front of us." At this point, if you're still overlooking the defending NFC champions, you might want to reconsider. Rest a sured they have the ' attention. The drafted wide receiver CJ Daniels in the sixth round of the 2026 NFL draft last week from the Miami Hurricanes. Daniels joins a wide receiver room that features some of the best receivers in the league, with Puka Nacua and Davante Adams. The former Hurricane also joins a team that has aspirations of getting back to the Super Bowl after falling short to the eventual Super Bowl champions the past two seasons. For Daniels, however, playing alongside veteran wide receiver Davante Adams might be the most exciting part about being selected by Los Angeles. "Davante is someone that I've always looked up to, he's a guy that I've always modeled my game after, my releases, how he plays the game of football," Daniels declared. The latest Ram also admitted to watching plenty of Puka Nacua tape. More : "I David Nwaba Jersey saw he was a fifth-round draft pick. I saw everything he was capable of doing, whether it was in the run game or pa s game. He's just a very dynamic player," Daniels added. Bringing in Daniels makes the battle for WR3 for Los Angeles interesting, as he will be competing with the likes of Jordan Whittington and Konata Mupfield. Daniels can easily make his mark in the early stages of training camp and later on in the summer when the preseason begins in August. However, if it takes Daniels longer to get onto the field, he has shown throughout his collegiate career that he is not afraid to take the difficult path. Daniels played four seasons for Liberty University before transferring to LSU for a season and ultimately finishing his career at Miami, where he helped the Hurricanes reach the national title game, while hauling in 50 pa ses for 557 yards and seven touchdowns in 13 games in 2025. With just days to go before the 2026 NFL Draft, the with the that jettisoned star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence. The deal saw the for the No. 10 overall pick, which was no doubt more than anyone was expecting them to get. Now, Big Blue stands , with the other coming at No. 5 overall. With needs on both sides of the ball, the Giants can now take care of the offense and defense with blue-chip prospects inside the top 10 of the draft later this week. And Dewayne Dedmon Jersey that's exactly what we have them doing in our new mock draft in the wake of the Lawrence trade with the Bengals. Giants 4-round mock draft after Lawrence trade Imagn Images Round 1, Pick 5: LB Sonny Styles, Ohio State ESPN's Jordan Raanan mentioned Styles as with the No. 5 pick, and it's not hard to see why. "Staying at No. 5, the three players who seem to be most squarely on their radar are Notre Dame running backJeremiyah Love, Ohio State linebackerSonny Stylesand (Ohio State safety Caleb) Downs," Raanan wrote. Styles is a freak athlete with sideline-to-sideline speed and great length. He's a strong tackler, good in run defense and has shown elite skills in coverage after posting an in that area last season. The Ohio State product can wear the green dot and will be a leader in New York's defense for a decade. Round 1, Pick 10 (via CIN): WR Jordyn Tyson, Arizona State The Giants were , which was his last opportunity to quell fears about his injury history. By all accounts, . "I think Jordyn Tyson goes much higher than earlier expected," ESPN's Matt Miller said. "Teams are comfortable with the INJ history. Conversation for him starts at 5 but he's off the board no later than 16." If not for his injury history, Tyson would likely be the undisputed No. 1 receiver in this cla s. The 6-foot-2, 203-pound pa s-catcher can line up anywhere on the field, is a polished route-runner and can even block. After losing Wan'Dale Robinson in free agency, the Giants need another weapon for quarterback Jaxson Dart acro s from star wideout Malik Nabers. Not only would Tyson check that box, he could very well provide an upgrade over Robinson. Round 2, Pick 37: DT Kayden McDonald, Ohio State The lo s of Lawrence will leave a void in the middle of the Giants' defense, hurting both the pa s-rush and run defense. Making matters worse, , even with Lawrence on the roster. While McDonald isn't much of a pa s-rusher, he showed improvement in that area last season with a career-high three sacks. He really shines as a run defender, with the Ohio State product posting the in run defense. Once viewed as a first-round pick, the belief is most teams now have him with a second-round grade because of his lack of pa s-rush prowe s. That's just fine for the Giants, as McDonald can provide the kind of boost to the run defense from Day 1 that New York needs. Round 4, Pick 105: CB Tacario Davis, Washington The lo s of Cor'Dale Flott leaves the Giants with a big void after the team failed to adequately addre s the position in free agency, leaving a potential starting duo of Paulson Adebo and uninspiring free-agent signing Greg Newsome outside. After taking a step back in 2024, Davis rebounded with a strong showing after he transferred to Washington. The 6-foot-4, 200-pound cornerback gave up a , notched a personal bests two interceptions and he showed out in the run game with an impre sive PFF grade of 81.8. Davis can offer some competition for Newsome on the boundary, and it's not crazy to think he could win that competition in Year 1. Deividas Sirvydis Jersey

The and are used to clashing during the NFL season as AFC South Division rivals. They're currently having a bit of an offseason overlap in an unexpected way with an undrafted quarterback. QB Derek Robertson is set to T.J. McConnell Jersey play for each team at their upcoming rookie minicamps, according to transactions reporter Aaron Wilson: Monmouth quarterback Derek Robertson invited to and rookie minicamps, per source Aaron Wilson (@AaronWilson_NFL) MORE: While not common, this does happen. Teams hold their rookie minicamps on slightly different dates, which allows for players who weren't drafted to attend multiple. It makes sense for the player, who is simply trying to impre s someone enough to earn a look for the rest of the summer. And in this case, the Titans and Jaguars must figure getting a look at Robertson is worth it, and so be it if another team does, too. If one of them likes him enough, they can offer him a more firm undrafted contract to keep him around. Robertson began his college career at Maine, where he played through the 2023 season. In that final Black campaign, he had 2,933 pa sing yards and 25 touchdowns. In 2024 at Monmouth, he was an AP FCS All-America Honorable Mention as he threw for 3,937 yards and 31 touchdowns. In 2025, Robertson only played seven games but still threw for 2,482 yards and 27 TDs. He's listed at 6-foot-2 and 200 pounds, so he's got enough size for the position. Now the task for Robertson, with two chances to do it, will be to impre s an NFL team enough in rookie minicamp to earn a spot in training camp and the preseason. More NFL news: T.J. Warren Jersey
